Watch for Con Artist
Full Description:
The county police and the state attorney general are urging people to be on guard against con artists claiming to be utility workers and home-improvement contractors. County police report that a 91-year-old man was recently bilked by a con artist claiming to represent BGE. He took $750 from the man under false pretenses. The attorney general said that ways to avoid being taken by home-repair scammers is to get recommendations from satisfied friends and neighbors, get at least two or three estimates, get references from prospective contractors and call the Consumer Protection Division at 410-528-8662 to learn about any complaints filed against a contractor. Consumers may also verify a contractor's license by going to the Home Improvement Commission Web site at www.dllr.state.md.us/pq.
